CCBI Expresses Solidarity with Students at Jantar Mantar Demonstration

NEW DELHI, July 24, 2026: The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) expressed solidarity with students who gathered at Jantar Mantar to raise concerns over issues affecting higher education and student welfare.

Representing the CCBI, Ajin Joseph, Associate Secretary of the CCBI Family Commission with Special Charge for Pro-Life Ministry, attended the gathering on 23 July and released a video message highlighting the Catholic Church's longstanding contribution to education in India.

In his message, Joseph recalled the Church's historic role in the country's educational development, noting that Catholic institutions have served generations of Indians through schools, colleges and universities. He said the Church has remained committed to providing quality education to people irrespective of caste, creed or religion and continues to contribute to nation-building.

Around 500 Catholic young people participated in the student mobilisation on July 20, led by Catholic youth leaders Sandra Tirkey, Archit Tiru and Denis Minz, who coordinated the "Sansad Chalo" march. Catholic youth organisations, including ICYM, MCYM, SMYM and YU4C Delhi, supported the initiative by mobilising young people to join the demonstration.

Jesuit, Redemptorist and diocesan priests, along with priests from various religious congregations and several religious sisters and brothers, were also present. Many of them have accompanied and supported the students' peaceful movement for more than a month.

Joseph encouraged young people to take a greater role in civic life and called on bishops, priests, religious and lay leaders to continue forming youth as responsible citizens committed to the common good.

Addressing concerns raised by the protesting students, he called for accountability from the Ministry of Education over the controversy surrounding the NEET examination. He appealed for justice for students and families affected by alleged irregularities and expressed concern over the reported loss of young lives linked to the crisis.

The participation of Catholic youth, clergy and religious in the demonstration reflected the Church's commitment to accompanying young people, promoting justice, upholding human dignity and encouraging peaceful democratic engagement on issues affecting the future of students and the nation.
