Catholics Worldwide Send Birthday Wishes to Pope Leo XIV

Rome, September 14, 2025 – The universal Church, along with leaders and people of goodwill worldwide, is rejoicing as Pope Leo XIV celebrates his 70th birthday. From Rome to dioceses across the globe, greetings and prayers have been offered for the Holy Father.

Messages of prayer and gratitude

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, released a message on Sunday morning on behalf of the Roman Curia. He thanked Pope Leo for his “tireless witness to the Gospel” and assured him of continued prayers for health and strength in guiding the People of God “in unity and peace.”

The Italian Bishops’ Conference expressed gratitude, emphasising that the Pope’s life reminds the faithful that “hope and fraternity are at the heart of Christian life.” Similarly, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines announced that every parish Mass would include prayers of thanksgiving, calling the Pope’s leadership “a constant source of mercy and encouragement.”

From Africa, the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) praised his concern for justice and peace, invoking blessings for “many years of fruitful ministry.”

Greetings from religious orders and organisations

Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, Superior General of the Jesuits, acknowledged how the Pope’s call to “go to the peripheries” continues to inspire their mission. Caritas Internationalis also expressed gratitude, affirming that his voice for the poor strengthens their service to those most in need.

Civil and ecumenical tributes

Political leaders joined the chorus of well-wishers. Italian President Sergio Mattarella commended the Pope for reminding the world of human dignity and the need for peace, extending “warmest wishes for health and serenity.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised his steadfast advocacy for dialogue and care for the environment, describing him as a source of “moral leadership for the global community.”

Christian leaders beyond the Catholic Church also marked the occasion. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople assured the Pope of prayers and gratitude for his dedication to Christian unity. The World Council of Churches echoed this sentiment, affirming a shared commitment to reconciliation within the human family.

Celebrations among the faithful

At the grassroots level, celebrations were equally fervent. Parishes in Latin America hosted special Masses of thanksgiving, while Polish youth movements presented a digital “spiritual bouquet” with over 50,000 pledged prayers. In Nigeria, diocesan cathedrals held evening vigils for the Pope’s intentions.

As greetings poured in from across continents, the occasion highlighted not only Pope Leo XIV’s global influence but also the deep affection and unity he inspires among the faithful and leaders alike.
