Shimoga, March 15, 2025 – The Catholic Think Tank of the Shimoga Diocese was officially inaugurated during an event held on March 15, 2025, at Sannidhi, Shimoga, under the leadership of the Laity Commission. The initiative aims to foster intellectual engagement, critical thinking, and proactive leadership among Catholics in the diocese. The inauguration event, which brought together Church leaders and laity from the diocese, included prayers, discussions, and the election of office bearers.
The programme commenced with a prayer led by Msgr. Stany D’Souza, the Vicar General of the Diocese. Delivering the inaugural message, Bishop Francis Serrao emphasised the importance of the think tank in addressing contemporary societal challenges. He underscored how the Catholic Church has historically played a pivotal role in intellectual and social movements and urged Catholics from the diocese to contribute actively to public discourse.
Rev. Fr. Sudeep Paul, MSFS, Director of Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education, Mangaluru, provided insights into the think tank’s objectives, structure, and operational framework. He highlighted its potential to serve both the Church and society in Shimoga in meaningful ways.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Roy Castelino, President of the Karnataka Region Think Tank, encouraged attendees to take an active role in public service and become role models in their communities. He stressed the need for tackling social issues while upholding values that benefit both humanity and the Church.
Following the addresses, Fr. Steevan D’Sa facilitated group discussions and then oversaw the election of office bearers. Mr. William Martis was elected as President of the Catholic Think Tank, Shimoga, while Ms. Irene D’Souza was elected as Vice President. Mr. Arogya Swamy was elected as Secretary of the association, while Mr. Thomas was chosen as Joint Secretary.
Bishop Serrao outlined the responsibilities of the newly elected members, encouraging them to lead with vision and dedication. He also appointed Fr. Steevan D’Sa as the Director and Sr. Theresa Mascarenhas SCB as the Assistant Director of the Catholic Think Tank, Shimoga Unit.
Mr. Anthony Dias delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries and participants. The event concluded with a closing prayer followed by a fellowship meal.
