Career Guidance Programme Enlightens Students at Khrist Raja School, New Delhi

New Delhi, July 17, 2025— A two-day career guidance programme was held on July 14 and 15 at Khrist Raja School, a government-aided institution in New Delhi, for students of Classes 9 and 10. The event was led by Fr. Nicholas Dias, Secretary for the Commission of Liturgy and Music in the Archdiocese of Delhi and Chaplain for the Anglo-Indian Community of India. The initiative aimed to provide students with clarity and direction in making informed career choices and also address the psychological and societal challenges commonly faced by adolescents.

The school’s principal, Mrs. Sujata Punj; Sister in Charge, Sr. Neel Kusum of the Religious of Jesus and Mary (RJM) congregation; and some faculty members, including class teachers, attended the seminar along with students.

Speaking to Catholic Connect, Fr. Nicholas emphasised that the programme formed part of his larger mission to support "the least, the lost, and the last" in society.

During the programme, Fr. Nicholas encouraged the students to critically examine their aspirations and guided them to assess themselves and make informed career choices. He addressed key topics such as the psychological pressures teenagers face, the burden of parental expectations, suicidal tendencies stemming from a lack of direction, and the societal challenges students navigate, especially in a highly competitive city like Delhi. He also discussed a wide range of career options, ranging from conventional fields like medicine, law, engineering, and media to more personalised paths based on each student’s strengths and subject interests.

To foster deeper reflection, students were given a unique homework assignment: to engage in conversations with their parents, teachers, and peers about their academic strengths, personal interests, and the current job market. They were also invited to engage with Fr. Nicholas individually for further guidance.

“My focus was on students in Classes 9 and 10 because they are at the threshold of choosing their academic streams—science, commerce, or humanities," Fr. Nicholas stated. "Setting the basics right at this stage can resolve many confusions later on. From selecting the appropriate stream and board to mapping career goals, a good start at the right time makes all the difference.”

The seminar concluded with overwhelmingly positive feedback from students and staff, with many describing the event as “enlightening” and “thought-provoking”.

The programme marked another step in Father Nicholas’s ongoing efforts to make career counselling accessible to students from weaker sections of society. It forms part of his broader youth ministry work across India, spanning more than 25 years. Future career guidance sessions are planned for lower classes up to Grade 6, in continuation of the school’s collaboration with him.
