Archbishop Thazhath Extends Invitation to Pope Leo XIV to Visit India

New Delhi, 22nd May 2025 – In a historic gesture of faith and fraternity, Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, has officially extended an invitation to Pope Leo XIV to visit India. The invitation comes shortly after the election of the new pope on 8 May 2025, marking a significant moment in the relationship between the Indian Catholic Church and the Vatican.

Archbishop Thazhath conveyed the heartfelt desire of millions of Indian Catholics to welcome the Holy Father to the subcontinent. "The people of India—across all rites and regions—eagerly await the visit of Pope Leo XIV. His presence would be a profound blessing for our faithful and a strong symbol of hope, peace, and unity in our diverse nation," the Archbishop stated.

India, home to over 20 million Catholics, has not seen a papal visit since Pope John Paul II's visit in 1999. With Pope Leo XIV known for his pastoral heart, missionary experience, and deep connection with the Global South, Indian Catholics are optimistic about the possibility of a papal pilgrimage.

The invitation also highlights the Church’s vital role in India in the fields of education, healthcare, and social service, and expresses the hope that a papal visit would further strengthen interfaith harmony and national unity.

The Vatican is yet to respond formally, but sources within the Catholic Church say the invitation has been received with warmth and gratitude.

If accepted, the visit would mark a new chapter in the relationship between the Holy See and the Indian Church under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, the first Augustinian pope in centuries and a passionate advocate for the marginalized.
