Apostolic Nunciature in India Calls for Prayers For the Soul of Pope Francis

New Delhi, April 21, 2025: The Apostolic Nunciature in India announced the passing away of Pope Francis on April 21 through an official communiqué issued on the evening of the same day. The statement, signed by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India, confirmed the Pope's passing and included the official statement made by His Eminence Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber.


In the communiqué, the Apostolic Nunciature in India called upon bishops, clergy, religious, and lay faithful across the country to offer prayers to commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of God.


The communiqué further urged the Catholic Church in India and around the world, as well as the global community, to cherish and carry forward the inspiring, compassionate, and loving legacy that Pope Francis leaves behind.


The Church and the world now mourn the loss of a pontiff who reshaped the papacy through his unwavering focus on mercy, inclusion, and social justice.
