Yellapur, Karnataka, July 19, 2025:
The Catechetical Commission of the Diocese of Karwar, led by Fr. Cyprian Silva, conducted a comprehensive training programme for catechism teachers at Holy Rosary Church, Yellapur, on Sunday, 13th July. Designed for the teachers of Haliyal Deanery, the event drew around 40 participants, including religious sisters, who actively engaged in the day-long formation.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome, followed by the first session led by Fr. Cyprian Silva, Director of the Catechetical Commission. Speaking on the theme “The Call of a Catechism Teacher and the Treasures Hidden in the Catechism of the Catholic Church in Building the Faith of our Children,” he highlighted the noble vocation of catechists. He stressed the importance of drawing from the rich spiritual and doctrinal resources found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church to shape and deepen the faith of children.
The second session introduced creative and interactive teaching methods to revitalise catechism classes. Fr. Silva’s presentation offered practical strategies and inspired the participants to approach their role with renewed enthusiasm. During group discussions, attendees expressed gratitude for the clarity and direction provided, and many shared their hopes for continued formation and support from the Commission.
The day culminated in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Fr. Raymond Fernandes, Dean of Haliyal Deanery. In his homily, Fr. Fernandes encouraged the catechists to be “Good Samaritans” to their students, walking alongside them with compassion and dedication in their faith journeys.
The Commission extended its sincere thanks to Fr. Roystan Gonsalves, Parish Priest of Holy Rosary Church, for hosting the event and ensuring all logistical arrangements. The presence of Fr. Philip Roque, Fr. Anthony Dsouza, and Fr. Simon Fernandes, priests from the deanery, provided valuable encouragement to the attendees.
Special appreciation was also expressed to Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, for his constant support and guidance of catechetical initiatives across the diocese.
The training served as a timely boost of motivation and spiritual renewal for the teachers as they prepare to embark on the new catechetical year with faith, dedication, and fresh energy.
