Young Catholic and Young Students Movement (YCS-YSM) Thrives in the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore

Madras-Mylapore, February 20, 2025 – The Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore has witnessed a remarkable resurgence in the Young Catholic Students (YCS) and Young Students Movement (YSM) since its renewal began on July 1, 2024. Under the guidance of one shepherd, His Grace Most Rev Dr. George Antonysamy, and initiatives of Rev. Fr. Ronald Richard S., Director of the Archdiocesan Youth Commission & YCS-YSM, this initiative has rapidly expanded, reaching 57 schools across the Archdiocese. Notably, on February 19, 2025, the 40th school formally established the movement at Madharpakkam, marking a significant milestone in the mission’s progress.

Prior to this revival, only one school was actively engaged in the movement. However, through consistent efforts, the initiative has gained momentum, with 2,500 students now actively participating. This movement, rooted in faith and service, has not only attracted Catholic students but has also seen participation from students of other religious backgrounds, reflecting its universal appeal and inclusive vision.

A key aspect of the YCS-YSM movement is its volunteer-driven model, where students take on leadership roles, fostering responsibility, teamwork, and faith-based action. The initiative has been further strengthened by the active involvement of school authorities, educators, and youth volunteers, all working together to instill values of faith, leadership, and social responsibility in young minds.

With its continued growth and impact, the YCS-YSM movement is set to play a crucial role in shaping the spiritual and moral foundation of the youth within the Archdiocese. As efforts continue, the focus remains on nurturing young leaders who will carry forward the mission of Christ in their schools and communities.
