Asansol, March 9, 2025: Over 220 women from seven parishes of the Paschim Burdwan Deanery gathered at St. John’s Church, Chelidanga, to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event, organized by the Diocese of Asansol, featured a Eucharistic Celebration, educational sessions, a quiz competition, and awareness programs. The day aimed to honor the contributions of women, empower them through knowledge, and promote their active role in society and the Church.
The celebration began with a Eucharistic Mass, presided over by Fr. Alexius Tudu, the Vicar General of the Diocese. Upon arrival, participants were welcomed with a rose and chandan tikka, receiving colorful badges to mark the significance of the occasion. In his homily, Fr. Alexius emphasized the importance of women dedicating time to their faith and the Church, just as they do for their families. He urged them to follow Christ’s example and place their trust in God rather than solely in their own strength.
Following the Mass, the gathering moved to the parish hall, where Sr. Initha, IBVM, Superior of Loreto Convent, Asansol, led an insightful session on women’s empowerment. Through a PowerPoint presentation, she highlighted how women perceive themselves, how society views them, and the need to embrace womanhood with confidence. She encouraged attendees to use their talents for the betterment of society, rather than limiting the celebration of womanhood to a single day.
An inter-parish quiz competition added an element of excitement, testing participants on women in the Bible, female Church leaders, and influential women worldwide. St. John’s Church, Chelidanga, secured first place, followed by St. Teresa’s Church, Durgapur, and St. Joseph’s Church, Chittaranjan, in second and third place, respectively.
Recognizing the increasing risks of cybercrime, a session was held in collaboration with the Lions Club of Asansol City. Officials from Asansol’s cybercrime branch educated attendees on online fraud and phone scams, offering practical advice on avoiding digital threats. Women were urged to remain vigilant against deceptive calls and messages that could result in financial loss.
The celebration also included group games, where participants engaged with enthusiasm. Winners received prizes, and trophies were awarded to the top quiz teams.
Fr. Dolphy, Dean of Paschim Burdwan Deanery, expressed his gratitude to the women for their active involvement. He also extended thanks to the Parish Council members, ICYM members, and all contributors who ensured the event’s success. The program concluded at 2:30 p.m. with a communal lunch, fostering a spirit of unity and celebration among attendees.
