The Papal Mass in Jakarta Offers a Historic Moment for Indonesia’s Catholic Minority

Jakarta, September 6, 2024: On Thursday evening, Pope Francis celebrated Mass for an estimated 100,000 attendees at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, marking a significant event for Indonesia’s Catholic community.

Before the liturgy commenced, two young Catholics, Eugene, a 24-year-old sustainability consultant, and Natasha, a 20-year-old graphic design student, shared their experiences as part of Indonesia’s Catholic minority with Vatican News. Both are active members of a youth group that focuses on faith discussions and charity initiatives.

Eugene expressed his excitement about the Pope's visit, highlighting its impact on Indonesia’s religious landscape. “As a minority group in a country dominated by a single religion, his visit brings much-needed visibility and recognition to us, something we've never experienced before,” he said.

He also noted the broader significance of the event, observing, “This is the first time I've seen such a large-scale inter-religious engagement, where even those from other faiths are curious about Catholicism. It’s an opportunity for them to explore and understand a different culture and religion.”

Natasha, reflecting on her hopes for the global Catholic community, shared a simple yet powerful message for Catholics in Italy: “I just want them to know that we’re here too. We’re Indonesian, we’re Catholic, and we love what we do.”
