The Diocese of Vasai commenced its Jubilee Year celebrations in December 2024, with a powerful emblem of faith and hope—the Diocesan Jubilee 2025 Cross. Meticulously designed and crafted, this sacred symbol stands as a testament to the unwavering belief in Christ’s resurrection. It serves as a poignant reminder that while the crosses of life are inevitable, our faith and hope in Christ remain unshakeable.
Designed by Fr. Robert Gonsalves, the Jubilee Coordinator for the Diocese of Vasai, the Jubilee Cross is a profound yet simple representation of the Christian faith. It features a front-facing cross bearing the crucified Christ and a symbolic figure of the Risen Christ at the back.
The Jubilee Cross has been crafted from three distinct types of natural wood. The cross at the front of the structure has been made using teakwood, while the figure of Christ crucified on it has been crafted using Shivani wood. The symbolic figure of the Risen Christ behind the cross has been made from pinewood.
The Jubilee Cross stands 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The front cross has a depth of 1.5 inches, while the symbolic figure of the Risen Christ at the back has a depth of 1 inch. The image of Christ on the cross measures 2.5 feet. The entire structure stands on a 6-inch base. The base has been adorned with intricate symbols that pay homage to Vasai’s rich cultural landscape. These include:
Natural and urban elements: mountains, buildings, palm trees, and fish.
Symbols of local traditions and livelihoods: Taarpa (a traditional wind instrument), boat, naangar (anchor), fort, wheel, banana, kaawad (a religious palanquin), rahat (traditional well), paan (betel leaf), milk, and sukeli (dried bananas).
These elements beautifully capture Vasai’s unique blend of rural, urban, farming, and fishing communities, making the cross not only a religious symbol but also a cultural emblem deeply resonant with the local people.
The Jubilee Cross was officially blessed and venerated on December 29, 2024, during the grand inauguration of the Jubilee Year celebrations in the Diocese of Vasai. This sacred event marked the beginning of a year dedicated to spiritual renewal, communal reflection, and a reaffirmation of faith.
At its core, the Jubilee 2025 Cross delivers a powerful message: “We are children of hope. Through faith in Christ, we transcend suffering, and in death, we embrace the promise of resurrection.” This cross stands not only as a physical representation of Christian belief but also as a daily reminder of endurance, perseverance, and ultimate victory in Christ.
As the Jubilee Year unfolds in the Diocese of Vasai, the Jubilee 2025 Cross will continue to shine as a beacon of unwavering faith, guiding the community toward a future filled with grace, love, and renewed hope.
