St. Joseph’s Institute’s New Program Aims to Transform Young Women’s Lives

Bangalore, September 17, 2024: St. Joseph’s Institute of Skills has launched a three-month baking training program exclusively for young women, aimed at providing practical skills and employment opportunities. This initiative, started in partnership with Vihaan Organization, offers training in bakery arts for young mothers aged 18 to 27. With a focus on practical learning, this course is designed to empower women by equipping them with the skills to start their own small-scale baking businesses.

Since the institute’s inception in 2020-21, it has trained over 1,100 students, primarily from vulnerable backgrounds such as school dropouts, unemployed individuals, HIV/AIDS survivors and women affected by sexual harassment. The baking program specifically targets housewives and young mothers, providing them with a chance to utilize their free time productively while gaining life skills. The institute expects to enroll 25 women this year and has plans to expand the course to other locations in the future.

"We are trying to empower women so they can learn a skill for their life. If not immediately, in the future they can start their own small businesses at home, making bakery items. We don’t want to leave behind those who are below 50%, those who may not have the academic qualifications but have the potential to build a better future," said Fr. Deepak, addressing how the programme will uplift women.

In addition to baking, St. Joseph’s Institute of Skills offers a wide range of other courses, including Hotel Management, Nursing Aide, Pre-Primary Teaching, Fashion Designing, Beautician Training and Computer Basics. These programs, designed to be both short-term and long-term, aim to equip individuals with practical skills to secure employment and improve their quality of life.
