Rising Threats in Chhattisgarh: Christians Call for Prayer and Protection

Baloda Bazar, Chhattisgarh, February 27, 2025: The Christian community in the villages of Ganeshpur, Bishrampur, and Janakpur in Chhattisgarh’s Baloda Bazar District faces growing tension following social media threats of violence reported to take place on March 1. Allegations have surfaced online accusing local Christians of cow slaughter, with a mob warning they would enter the villages and take action. A local Hindutva leader and media influencer, Aadesh Soni, has been identified as the source of these threatening remarks.

"These villages, home to approximately 1,100 Christian families, have long depended on the bone trade, a business dating back to British rule. But a government order issued two months ago forced its closure, leaving many without a livelihood," said Brother Shibu Thomas, founder of Persecution Relief. In response to the threat, Brother Shibu led a prayer walk through the villages, seeking divine protection for every family and praying for peace.

Amid rising tensions, Christian leaders from Nagaland have written to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, expressing alarm over an alleged hate speech delivered by Aadesh Soni at a recent “Religious Parliament” event. The speech reportedly targeted the Christian residents of Bishrampur, Ganeshpur, and Janakpur, heightening fear and insecurity among religious minorities.

Msgr. Victor Henry Thakur, Archbishop of Raipur, told Asia News, "Now that Aadesh Soni's hate speech has gone viral, any incident or attack in the area will not be accidental... In such a case, the government of Chhattisgarh will bear full responsibility."

Christian social reformer Vishal Mangalwadi has also called for action, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an open letter to intervene and prevent large-scale anti-Christian violence reportedly being planned.

While concerns persist, the leader of the group accused of making threats has denied any intention to harm anyone. Authorities are yet to respond, and the Christian community remains on high alert.

Brother Shibu, in solidarity with Chhattisgarh’s Christians, urged the Indian Christian community to pray, drawing parallels to the biblical story of Haman, whose plot against the Jews failed when they fasted and prayed. He called for unity in faith, believing prayer will bring protection and peace.
