Pope Francis Praises Singapore’s Growth and Commitment to Social Justice

Singapore, September 12, 2024: In his address at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Pope Francis acknowledged Singapore’s vital role as a global commercial hub. He described it as a "crossroads of primary importance" where diverse cultures and peoples converge.

Reflecting on the legacy of Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, the Pope emphasized how his visionary leadership laid the groundwork for the country's rapid progress.

The Pope also commended Singapore’s efforts to ensure that economic growth benefits all citizens, recognizing the nation’s initiatives in providing public housing, quality education, and a robust healthcare system.

Addressing the challenges of the digital age, Pope Francis underscored the importance of cultivating genuine human relationships. He encouraged Singaporeans to use technology for fostering solidarity rather than isolation.

The Pope praised Singapore’s harmonious coexistence of diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious communities and highlighted the role of public authorities in maintaining this inclusivity.

He pointed to the city-state as an example of how even small nations can significantly curtail the global environmental crisis and urged Singapore to continue seeking innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

Pope Francis ended his speech with a prayer for Singapore’s leaders, hoping that their actions would continue to reflect inclusiveness and fraternity for the benefit of all. “God bless Singapore!” he declared in closing.
