Pope Francis Commends Swiss Guards for Their Patience and Service to Pilgrims

Vatican, January 20, 2025: Pope Francis, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Pontifical Swiss Guard Foundation, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Swiss Guards for their unwavering service to the Vatican and the millions of pilgrims they assist annually. Addressing members of the Foundation during an audience in Rome, he commended their patience, dedication, and steadfast role in protecting the Pope and welcoming visitors to the Holy See.

Founded in Switzerland in 2000, the Pontifical Swiss Guard Foundation supports the mission of the Swiss Guards, one of the oldest military units in continuous operation, established in 1506 by Pope Julius II. Pope Francis highlighted the Foundation's essential contributions, including financial aid, military training, and family support for the Guardsmen.

During his remarks, the Pope praised the growing number of families within the Swiss Guard, emphasizing the importance of family well-being for both the Church and society. "I like it when the Guards marry and have children," he said, noting how the Foundation assists in educating their children and supporting former Guards who return home after their service.

Reflecting on the evolution of the Swiss Guard over its 500-year history, Pope Francis acknowledged their expanded role in welcoming millions of pilgrims, often requiring remarkable patience. "This is something beautiful about them: they repeat things, they explain… Such great patience. Well done!" he remarked.

In his closing message, the Pope encouraged collaboration within the Church and thanked the Foundation for its generous support over the past 25 years. “We all need to help and support one another, and this applies to individual communities and the entire Church,” he said, underscoring the interconnected mission of the Church.

Pope Francis concluded by expressing his deep appreciation for the ongoing efforts of the Foundation in strengthening the Pontifical Swiss Guard and fostering unity within the Church.
