Kerala, December 11, 2024: On International Human Rights Day, December 10, Sister Joicy Joy, a nun and lawyer from Kerala is celebrated for her relentless advocacy for the marginalized. Working in the Wayanad district, she addresses issues of domestic violence, land disputes and the rights of tribal communities, women and children, combining her legal expertise and faith to uplift those in need.
Since 1948, International Human Rights Day has been observed globally to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Pope Francis, in his Angelus message last year, reminded the faithful that “the commitment to human rights is never finished,” urging the world to draw inspiration from individuals working tirelessly for justice and peace. Sister Joicy exemplifies this call through her dedication to defending life, dignity and liberty.
Sister Joicy’s journey as a legal advocate began with a pivotal case involving compensation for the accidental death of a Paniya tribal woman. Her successful efforts secured substantial compensation for the bereaved family, inspiring her to pursue legal advocacy as a ministry.
Appointed as a Legal Counsellor under Kerala’s Women and Child Department, Sister Joicy expanded her role to address domestic violence cases, offering free legal and psychological support to victims. Her jurisdiction spans five local administrations, granting her the authority to intervene in complex legal matters.
Working alongside a team of lay volunteers, she embodies the Church’s call to synodality by collaboratively addressing the legal and emotional needs of marginalized communities.
In the past year, Sister Joicy has tackled 105 cases of domestic violence, resolved 30 family disputes and handled 17 land property cases. Additionally, she conducted 117 counseling sessions, providing emotional support to those in crisis.
A Sister of Charity of Nazareth, Sister Joicy integrates her faith and vocation to create a more just society. Her work exemplifies a profound commitment to human rights, shining as a beacon of hope for the vulnerable. On this International Human Rights Day, her story inspires others to join the fight for justice and equality.
