Indian Jesuit Thanks Zagreb Mission Office for Supporting Croatian Missionary's Beatification

ZAGREB, Croatia, May 28, 2025 – Father Irudaya Jothi, an Indian Jesuit and vice-postulator for the cause of beatification of Croatian missionary Father Ante Gabrić, visited the National Missionary Office in Zagreb on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. During his visit, he met with the Office’s staff to personally thank them for their prayerful and practical support in advancing the beatification process of the revered missionary, who served in India until his death in 1988.

During the meeting, Fr. Jothi recalled Father Gabrić’s enduring spirit of service, quoting his memorable words: “There is no fatigue here. Every day, a new happiness, a new comfort: to share a smile, to share a greeting, to share a blessing.” He highlighted how this motto reflects the spirit of service and missionary dedication that marked the life of Fr. Gabrić. 

Speaking in Bengali, Fr. Jothi offered a priestly blessing to those present and emphasised that Fr. Gabrić's life journey still inspires many people in India today. The Indian Jesuit, who had the privilege of working with Fr. Gabrić during his religious formation, is also the author of The Apostle of the Sundarbans—the first English-language biography of Gabrić published in India.

 During the visit, Fr. Jothi shared personal recollections and stories of their missionary life together, testifying to Fr. Gabrić’s deep faith, unwavering love for God, and dedication to the poor. He emphasised that the life and work of Father Gabrić are still an inspiration to many today, and his missionary stories are a joy to read because they convey the strength of faith and encouragement for a rich spiritual life.

As part of his visit to Croatia, Fr. Jothi will also travel to Metković, Father Gabrić’s birthplace, where he is scheduled to meet members of the Father Ante Gabrić Foundation. The Foundation works to preserve and promote the legacy of the missionary, aiming to ensure that his message of love, hope, and missionary commitment continues to inspire both the Church and society.

The Father Ante Gabric Foundation in Croatia is the main organisation spearheading the movement for the beatification of Father Ante Gabric. The foundation is supported in its endeavour by the Jesuits of the Croatia Province.
