Bhubaneswar, August 31, 2025 — From working as a construction labourer in Bengaluru to securing an MBBS seat in Odisha, 19-year-old Subham Sabar’s journey is one of grit and determination.
A resident of Muddulibha, a remote village near Banapur in Khurda district, Subham overcame severe financial hardship to chase his dream of becoming a doctor. Unable to afford expensive coaching, he travelled to Karnataka and took up work as a construction worker to fund his NEET-UG coaching and admission fees.
His hard work and perseverance paid off when he cleared the NEET-UG in his very first attempt this year, securing a seat at MKCG Medical College in Berhampur. He achieved a rank of 1,82,212 in the ST category.
“I did not want to sit idle after the exams. I decided to work somewhere and support myself,” Subham recalled. His determination ensured that despite his family’s modest means, his ambitions never wavered.
On 14 June, Subham received a call from his coaching institute’s teacher, informing him that he had cleared NEET. He immediately returned to Berhampur, relieved that his sacrifices and months of labour had borne fruit. “Besides repaying dues of the coaching centre, I saved money for food and boarding while pursuing my dream in the medical college. Some neighbours in the village also extended a helping hand whenever I faced hardships,” he explained.
His father, Sahadeb Sabar, a farmer, expressed pride in his son’s achievement and appealed for government support to help Subham continue his medical studies. “He is hardworking and meritorious. Despite our limited resources, we never discouraged him from pursuing higher studies,” Sahadeb said.
Subham’s remarkable journey from a village in Khurda to the halls of a medical college stands as a shining example of resilience, determination and the power of education to transform lives.
