End of a Pontificate: Pope Francis' Fisherman's Ring Officially Destroyed in Vatican Ritual

Vatican, May 6th 2025: On May 6, 2025, the Vatican officially destroyed Pope Francis' Fisherman's Ring and lead seal during the 12th general congregation of the College of Cardinals. This ritual, overseen by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlengo, signifies the end of a pope's authority and prevents the misuse of his seal for forging documents. The destruction was carried out in the New Synod Hall at the Vatican.

Traditionally, the Fisherman's Ring, bearing an image of Saint Peter, symbolizes the pope's role as the successor to Saint Peter. Historically, the ring was used to seal official documents, and its destruction upon a pope's death prevents unauthorized use.

Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, was buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. His funeral incorporated significant Catholic symbols and rituals, including the destruction of the Fisherman's Ring to mark the conclusion of his papal reign.
