Church-Led Relief Efforts Underway as Floods Claim Lives in Vijayawada

Vijayawada, September 17, 2024: In the wake of severe flooding caused by unprecedented rainfall in Vijayawada, relief efforts are being swiftly coordinated to assist the affected population by the Social Service Centre (SSC) of Vijaywada diocese under the leadership of Bishop Joseph Raja Rao Thelagathoti.

The floods, which began in late August 2024, inundated nearly 40% of the city, severely impacting over 276,000 people, particularly in slum areas. Many have been displaced, with 20,000 people evacuated to safer locations.

Immediate relief measures include the distribution of essential supplies such as dry rations, drinking water, and emergency medicines. Families in need are also receiving blankets, sanitation kits, and milk for infants, as authorities and volunteer groups work tirelessly to ensure aid reaches the most affected areas.

3400 relief kits valued around Rs. 34 lakhs have been distributed so far with the target being to distribute 8900 kits. The relief work is targeting 20 slums worst hit by the floodwaters, and focuses on providing food, clean water, and hygiene products to help displaced families.

Despite ongoing relief operations, challenges remain in reaching certain flooded areas, especially inner lanes of slums where residents have been stranded. Local volunteers and government teams are working to overcome these difficulties, with more resources being mobilized to address the urgent needs of the population. Additionally, efforts to clear flood debris and restore essential services, such as electricity and transportation, are underway to bring some normalcy back to the city.

The next phase of relief will focus on long-term recovery, including the distribution of education kits for children and further support for the affected families.
