Donkorkrom, Ghana, January 7, 2025: The Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary in Ghana have launched the “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow” project to combat deforestation and environmental degradation. The initiative, which includes planting trees, grass, and flowers, aims to address climate change and promote sustainable environmental practices in Donkorkrom and the Afram Plains region in Eastern Ghana. It was officially launched in partnership with the Ghana Forestry Commission during the 2024 Green Ghana campaign.
The practice of illegal mining, known locally as "galamsey," and rampant tree felling for charcoal production have contributed to severe deforestation in Ghana. This has in turn resulted in various parts of the country, especially the Afram Plains region, facing issues like soil erosion, water crises, and extreme temperatures, threatening agriculture and local livelihoods. Despite being surrounded by the Volta, Afram, and Obosum rivers, Donkorkrom often struggles with water shortages, highlighting the urgent need for environmental intervention.
As a way of averting some of these conditions, the Missionary Sisters, for several years now, have prioritized tree planting at educational institutions run by them. Inspired by Pope Francis’ Laudato si’ and the vision of their congregation’s founder, Bishop Joseph Shanahan, the sisters encourage students to plant and nurture trees, ensuring a sustainable and eco-friendly environment. “The trees provide shelter, enhance the beauty of the school grounds, and create a conducive learning environment,” said Sr. Stella Nwosu, headmistress of one of the schools run by the Missionary Sisters.
The Tree Planting initiative in the Afram Plains represents a joint effort between the State and the Church. The government recognizes the Church and religious sisters as role models, noting the exemplary management of institutions under their care. While the project faces challenges, including high maintenance costs and the economic struggles of the local population, the Missionary Sisters remain steadfast. Their efforts serve as a beacon of hope, advocating for environmental stewardship and a brighter, greener future for Ghana.
