Bishop of Shimoga Leads Lenten Catechesis at Our Lady of Vailankanni Church, Bhadravathi

Bhadravathi, Shimoga, March 22, 2025— Bishop Francis Serrao SJ, of the Diocese of Shimoga, led a special Lenten catechesis session for adults at Our Lady of Vailankanni Church, Gandhinagar in Bhadravathi. The session followed a solemn Way of the Cross and was attended by a large gathering of parishioners seeking spiritual enrichment.

Bishop Serrao’s catechesis centered on the significance of Lenten observances, the symbolism of numbers in the Bible, and key aspects of Christian faith.

Reflecting on the 40-day Lenten period, he drew parallels with biblical events such as Jesus’ 40 days in the desert. He also explained the symbolic meanings of numbers in Scripture, highlighting seven as a number of completeness and six as a sign of imperfection. Referencing the Miracle at the Wedding at Cana, he illustrated how Jesus transformed water in six stone jars into wine, presenting Himself as the seventh and ultimate fulfillment.

Expounding on the three pillars of Lent—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—Bishop Serrao connected them to Jesus’ three temptations in the desert and the spiritual struggles Christians face today. He also referenced biblical passages such as the parable of Lazarus and the rich man and the crucifixion of the two thieves to emphasize the importance of making choices that lead to salvation.

Drawing from the Old Testament, he spoke about the two trees in the Book of Genesis—the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life—identifying the Cross on Calvary as the new Tree of Life that brings redemption. He also explained the significance of Bethlehem, meaning "House of Bread," as the birthplace of Jesus, who later offered Himself as the Bread of Life through His sacrifice on the Cross.

In preparation for Holy Week, Bishop Serrao highlighted the significance of the Paschal Triduum and encouraged parishioners to actively participate, particularly in the foot-washing ceremony on Maundy Thursday, in line with Pope Francis’ call for inclusivity. He also elaborated on the blessing of the three holy oils by bishops: the Oil of Catechumens for baptismal preparation, the Oil of the Sick for anointing the ill, and the Holy Chrism used during baptism, the consecration of new altars and church doors, the ordination of bishops, and the blessing of church bells.

Concluding his catechesis, the bishop reflected on the resurrection, clarifying that it is not mere resuscitation but a transformative passage to eternal life—the central promise of the Christian faith.

Following the session, Fr. Steevan D’Sa, the parish priest, expressed gratitude to Bishop Serrao for his enlightening discourse. The evening continued with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, during which parishioners, including children and youth, were recognized for their contributions to the church’s jubilee celebrations, including logo and mascot design as well as essay competitions.

Bishop Serrao also blessed and inaugurated a newly installed statue of St. Joseph, while Sr. Wilma, superior of the congregation, unveiled the donor name board for the Providence Presbytery.

The event concluded with blessings and a deep sense of spiritual renewal among the attendees.
