New Delhi, July 31, 2025: The Conference of Capuchin Major Superiors of India (CCMSI) has strongly condemned the recent arrest of Sr Preethi Mary, Sr Vandana Francis, and Mr Sukaman Mandavi in Chhattisgarh. The organisation has labelled the charges of forceful religious conversion and child labour as baseless, describing them as a gross violation of human dignity and religious freedom.
In an official statement released on Monday, CCMSI expressed deep concern over what it called “unjust” arrests, highlighting that the individuals in question are widely respected for their selfless service, compassion, and steadfast commitment to the welfare of the poor and marginalised.
“These individuals have dedicated themselves to love, peace, and justice – the very values that hold up the fabric of a just society,” the statement reads. “Targeting innocent nuns and a layman who have worked tirelessly for social upliftment is not only unjust, but a heinous act against the rights of minorities in India.”
The Capuchin leadership also reaffirmed the Christian community’s service to the nation, rooted in fraternity and solidarity, particularly for the voiceless and the forgotten. It warned that such incidents, far from being isolated, are part of a broader pattern that spreads fear and misinformation, undermining unity and peaceful coexistence.
Calling on the Government of Chhattisgarh and relevant authorities to act with “responsibility, discernment, and justice,” the CCMSI urged immediate action to stop what it described as harassment and unlawful detention. It demanded the unconditional release of Sr. Preethi Mary, Sr. Vandana Francis, and Mr. Sukaman Mandavi, along with a transparent and impartial inquiry into the matter.
“Let truth and justice prevail,” the statement concluded. “Let our country remain a place where every citizen, regardless of faith or background, can live and serve in peace and dignity.”
The letter was signed by Fr. George Antony, OFM Cap, President of CCMSI, and Fr. Brian Raymond Bandya, OFM Cap, Secretary.
