Archbishop of Bangalore Declares Day of Penance After Theft of Blessed Sacrament

Bangalore, February 28, 2025 – A shocking act of sacrilege has taken place at St. Anthony’s Church, Uttarahalli, prompting Archbishop Peter Machado to declare Friday, February 28, 2025, as a Day of Penance and Reparation across the Archdiocese of Bangalore.

On the night of February 25, 2025, unknown intruders broke into the church’s Adoration Chapel and stole the Monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament. Despite a police complaint, the sacred vessel remains missing, raising fears that the Holy Eucharist has been desecrated.

Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Archbishop Machado called on the faithful to observe a day of penance. He also mandated that all churches and religious houses in the archdiocese hold an hour of Eucharistic Adoration at a suitable time. "Let us unite in fervent prayer, seeking God’s mercy and making amends for this grievous offense against the Holy Eucharist," he urged.

The Deans of the Diocese have been asked to ensure the solemn observance and submit reports on their compliance.

The incident has caused widespread distress among the Catholic community, with many calling for increased security at places of worship. Authorities are investigating the theft, but as of now, there are no leads on the missing Monstrance.
