The Convent of St. Augustine

Just above the convent of St John of God, there stood a majestic Monastery or Convent of St. Augustine. The magnificent structure is in ruins and one can see a tower that has withstood the test of time. The Augustinian Friars built the Convent in 1572. The Convent and the Church were completed in 1602. To the North of the Convent was the Church with its façade facing East. It had two towers and contained bells of enormous size. The Church had eight Chapels and four Altars. The vault of Church had collapsed on 8th September 1842 thus burying the Altars and the Chapels. These Altars and Chapels can now be seen, especially after the work of excavation, undertaken in 1992 by the Archeological Survey of India. The façade had fallen on 8th August 1931 and half of the South tower on 19th August of the same year. What remains of the façade is only the North tower.
