Pope Francis Calls for Christo Centric Reflection to Deepen Synodality in the Church

Vatican City, November 30, 2024: Pope Francis addressed the participants of the Plenary Assembly of the International Theological Commission on November 28 at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. Highlighting the significance of the upcoming Jubilee Year and the recently concluded Synod of Bishops, he urged theologians to re-center their focus on Christ and advance the theology of synodality as a cornerstone for the Church's mission.

In his address, the Holy Father emphasized the necessity of "putting Christ back at the center," especially in preparation for the Jubilee Year, which coincides with the 1700th anniversary of the first great Ecumenical Council, Council of Nicaea. He described the Council as a milestone in defining Jesus Christ as the Son of God and called for a renewed theological effort to deepen understanding of Christ’s mystery, promoting fraternity and hope amidst a polarized world.

The Pope also stressed the importance of a "theology of synodality," underlining its role in uniting the Church and fostering collective participation in its mission. Referring to the Synod’s Final Document, he encouraged theologians to explore synodality as a framework for enhancing the Church’s pastoral care and missionary outreach.

The address concluded with Pope Francis reminding theologians to embody joy and humour in their work, rooted in the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He blessed the assembly and requested their prayers, saying with a touch of humour, "Pray for me, not against me!"

The theological insights from this assembly are expected to influence the Church’s activities during the Holy Year and beyond.
