Mysuru, November 14, 2025: A three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) programme for Prison Ministry India (PMI) volunteers and coordinators was held from 11 to 13 November at the Catholic Centre, Mysore, aimed at strengthening skills, awareness, and pastoral sensitivity for work in prisons and with affected families.
The programme was inaugurated by Bishop Francis Serrao of Mysore, who highlighted the Church’s responsibility to accompany those in prison with compassion and dignity. In his address, he reminded participants that their work is “not merely a charitable act but an essential expression of mercy,” urging them to view each inmate as “someone loved by God and capable of renewal.” He also stressed the importance of supporting the families and children of prisoners, who often face hidden struggles.
The training was led by Sr. Milagrin and Sr. Mable D’Silva, with additional input from Dr Michael Noronha, secretary of the commission for prison ministry. Over the three days, participants took part in interactive learning sessions, life-skill modules, role-plays, and group presentations designed to build empathy, communication skills, and confidence. They also received guidance on presentation techniques to help them conduct training and awareness sessions in parishes, schools, and community groups.
Volunteers expressed that the programme deepened their understanding of the human and pastoral dimensions of prison ministry and renewed their commitment to serve those on the margins with respect and hope.
